Seattle

Stopped by Anchorage for a quick hello to friends, then flew to Seattle with Tim for a few days to visit Dr. Elise and to check out my new apartment.

We piled on my flying boogie board and flew up to Port Townsend for sushi with Dr. Captain Stephen Kinsley and Laura, missed the ferry on the way back and ate four pounds of cherries instead.

Kodiak part IV: Pasagshak fire

To cap off an epic Kodiak trip, my two best friends from high school happened to be in town and after I surprised them, we rallied old school style and camped out past Pasagshak, like in the old days. Built a huge fire...

and stayed up all night, this is the same fire at about six am., at which point we jumped in the ocean for a sunrise salute.

Kodiak part III: Old Harbor to Karluk

Next, John Sikes and I flew to Old Harbor for a little walk/paddle, over the mountains to Windy Lake, floated most of the Spiridon drainage with larger than expected rapids, glacial braids, a popped raft, and a surprise finish, then paddled in 30+ knot winds and breaking swells to Carlson Pt., then an open ocean crossing to Larson Bay where we ate lots of ice cream and John's wife flew and met us for the final leg- up over the mountains to Karluk Lake, and down the river to the Fish and Game camp and village. You can click on this photo for a link to a slideshow of some other photos from the trip.

Kodiak part II: 4th of July

Flew from Ketchikan to Kodiak on the 3rd, from the airport directly inflated my boat and paddled out to Puffin Island for a camp and fireworks watching with Uncle Rob and friends.

so beautiful that it was like popping my eyeballs

my triumphant arrival at the island

??

Early afternoon on the friday of the 4th of July weekend, downtown Ketchikan is rocking... This was something like a family carnival??

Meyer's Chuck

A cool doc at the clinic took me out for a weekend to his homestead community for a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Kayaking, stories, gardening, barbequed King salmon, skiffs= bliss.

Ketchikan

The month of June was spent in Ketchikan for a medical internship, and I was fortunate to have amazing docs to work with, and full access to Ketchikan General Hospital to watch surgery, births, etc.

They say it rains all the time in Ketchikan, but I think it only rained maybe five or six days out of the month I was there- I left with a little sunburn.

Hiking up Dude Mt.

I used the soft flash to illuminate my face on this self-portrait, and it looks so fake and weird to me.

One of the nurses was kind enough (and similarly obsessed with fish and subsistence) to take me out fishing for King salmon. Beautiful fish...

All I had were tennis shoes with ziploc bags inside.

Afognak part II

Three days of sunshine, walking, and paddling.

Afognak rapeage- the post logging scene.

Afognak

Flew to LitnikLand with uncle Rob- got off the float plane at the lake and immediately floated the river to the cabin, found the greenhouse thriving, two fine fellows enjoying camplife, all gracious enough to let me stay and play for a few days.

"the falls"

I was fortunate to arrive just in time for the first sockeye of the year (on the barbeque)

Happy guy: steelhead fishing, morel bonanza a la subsistence saturday adorning fresh smoky salmon burgers on the grill, and of course, it's always sunny at Litnik...

Can it get any better?? Wait, is that Uncle running the falls!

Four days later, with a smile on my face, happiness in my belly, and the sunshine on my shoulder, leaving for a little walk to the North end.

Kodiak

Summer begins. Flew to Kodiak, picked up by Nate, and within a few hours two good friends lent us their trucks and we were rafting down the mighty Buskin. A short test clip from Nate's new helmet cam (water on lens/Blogger makes the quality poor).

The Summer of 10

And somehow, summer comes yet again, the summer of 10. Here is the last day of school, and this is the face of domination.
